Entry requirements:

    General Regulations Governing Admission to Higher Degree Programmes

    • Candidates for admission to higher degree programmes shall normally be graduates of the University of Ibadan or other Universities/Institutions recognised by the Senate. Admission shall be made by the Postgraduate College on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    • Candidates without any previous higher degrees in the relevant discipline may be admitted only to either the Degree of Master or the Professional Degree of Master.
    • Candidates with recognised “Research Higher” Degree in the relevant discipline may be admitted to the M.Phil or Ph.D. degree programmes as appropriate, on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
    • A candidate admitted to the degree of Master of University of Ibadan who obtained a weighted average mark of 55.0 – 59.9%, or a CGPA of between 4.0 and 4.9 may be offered provisional admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D programmes. Such candidates shall be assessed within three semesters of full time and four semesters of part time registration for the M.Phil/Ph.D to Ph.D conversion. This shall also apply to students who graduated from other universities    

    SPECIAL WAIVER FOR MATURED APPLICANTS

    • All University of Ibadan graduates should be admitted to Postgraduate programme with the ordinary level criteria existing at the time their first admission. Candidate who did not fulfill the requirements as at the time of their admission are not eligible for consideration.
    • Special consideration may be given to candidates, who obtained their first degree not less than 20 years from the time of seeking admission to any postgraduate programmes. Such candidates must have been found to possess special skills or abilities and professionally or academically engaged during the period of 20 years.

Our Geography program of study that examines the Earth's physical features, climate, ecosystems, and human activities. The Faculty of Science offers Geography programs that provide students with a solid foundation in the scientific principles and methods used to understand and analyze the Earth's processes and spatial patterns. Here is an overview of the course content typically covered in Geography programs within the Faculty of Science:

Physical Geography: 

  • This course focuses on the physical aspects of the Earth, including landforms, climate systems, biogeography, and natural resources. Students learn about processes such as weathering, erosion, plate tectonics, and the formation of natural features.

Environmental Systems: 

  • This course explores the interactions between the Earth's atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere. Students study topics such as weather and climate, hydrology, ecosystems, and environmental change.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS): 

  • This course introduces students to GIS technology and its applications in spatial analysis, mapping, and data visualization. Students learn how to collect, manage, analyze, and present geographic data using GIS software.

Remote Sensing: 

  • This course focuses on the acquisition and interpretation of data from satellite and airborne sensors. Students learn how to analyze remote sensing images to study land cover, vegetation, urban areas, and other environmental features.

Climatology: 

  • This course examines the Earth's climate system, including atmospheric circulation, weather patterns, climate change, and the impacts of human activities on climate. Students learn about climate modeling, data analysis, and climate prediction.

Biogeography: 

  • This course explores the distribution of plants, animals, and ecosystems on Earth. Students study factors influencing species distribution, biodiversity patterns, and the impacts of human activities on ecosystems.

Geomorphology: 

  • This course focuses on landforms and the processes that shape the Earth's surface. Students learn about the formation of mountains, rivers, glaciers, coastal features, and how human activities can impact geomorphic processes.

Geographical Research Methods: 

  • This course provides students with practical skills in conducting geographical research. Students learn about research design, data collection techniques, statistical analysis, and report writing.

Geographical Data Analysis: 

  • This course focuses on the analysis and interpretation of geographic data using statistical methods and spatial analysis techniques. Students learn how to analyze geographic data to understand spatial patterns, relationships, and trends.

Environmental Impact Assessment: 

  • This course explores the process of assessing the potential environmental impacts of proposed development projects. Students learn about the methods, regulations, and frameworks used to evaluate the environmental consequences of human activities.
